Extreme Heat Shelter – Hampton Roads Ecumenical Lodgings and Provisions

hot-weatherA Temporary Cooling Center is set up on days where the National Weather Services designates “Extreme Heat” advisories.

Temperatures that are expected to be in the high 90s, with the humidity pushing the heat index as high as 105 degrees or more. The Weather Service advises people to stay in air-conditioning if possible. If you must be outside, wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing, take frequent breaks in the shade and drink plenty of fluid.

On Extreme Heat days, H.E.L.P. has cooling centers and a mobile cooling van that travels the streets and makes stops at various places to ensure that the homeless are:
  • being kept hydrated
  • medically safe
  • not experiencing any trauma
  • and are nourished
