The annual H.E.L.P. Walkathon was held Saturday, September 24, 2011. What a beautiful morning for our 100 walkers, joggers and cyclists to enjoy while raising awareness and funding to end homelessness “one step at a time”. While raining over most of Hampton, we only had a few drizzles. A big thank you to all that participated to include Hampton Mayor Molly Ward, Linda Batchelor-Smith, and representatives for B J Roberts and the Hampton Sheriffs Department, who have so far raised $770 towards the Walkathon. The Sheriffs Department has also donated 70 pairs of sneakers to H.E.L.P. in addition to the money their team raised. The Kiwanis Club, the Hampton Democratic Committee, numerous church groups to include Langley Baptist and First Presbyterian were among our many participants. We are thankful to our sponsors including Bob Harper Photography, Senator John Miller, American Legion Post 48 and Habitat for Humanity. Please watch our website for photos, a complete list of sponsors and the final amount raised later next week. Much appreciation goes to Walkathon Committee Chair, Mr. Bob Martin and honorary committee members Senator John Miller, Delegate Jeion Ward, City of Hampton elected officials Mayor Molly Ward, Treasurer Bob Williams, Commissioner of Revenue Ross Mugler, Clerk of Court Linda Batchelor-Smith and Sheriff B J Roberts. Before the walk began, we had a moment of silence for Mr. Michael Dawson who passed away September 15, 2011. The H.E.L.P. staff walked as Team Michael, homeless no more. Rest in peace our Christian Brother. Thank you to the committee, board members, staff and volunteers that helped make the Walkathon a success. if you have not yet made your donation in support of the Walkathon or Team Michael, visit our donation page.
